Home Reimagined: Kurt’s ALS Journey
May is ALS Awareness Month, and Home Builders Foundation is honored to share the story of Kurt and his wife, Mary. Kurt was diagnosed with ALS, and within just a few weeks, he lost the ability to stand or walk without help. Their home, once comfortable and familiar, became a daily challenge.
Without an accessible bathroom, Mary had to rely on sponge baths and washing Kurt’s hair in the kitchen sink. Bathing safely wasn’t possible, and even helping him use the toilet was difficult and unsafe. They had started talking about setting up a camp shower on the back deck just to get by.
Thanks to our Project Captain, Lennar, that’s no longer necessary. They widened the bathroom door, installed a roll-in shower, and built a ramp. With these updates, Kurt can get around safely, and he and Mary feel more confident in his daily care.
Every project like this reminds us how important accessibility is, and how much it means to the families we serve. We’re grateful to Lennar for making this possible for Kurt and Mary.
